Tallow has gone from a niche find to one of the most talked-about ingredients in skincare, and that popularity naturally raises questions. Is it backed by anything more than a trend cycle? Does it actually do what people claim? And is it the right choice for every skin type?
To get real answers, we sat down with Dr. Gina Marie Caputo, DO, a board-certified dermatologist who has practiced medical, surgical, and cosmetic dermatology since 2017. Dr. Gina has spent her career helping patients repair compromised skin barriers, and she brings that same clinical perspective to how she evaluates ingredients like tallow. Below, she walks us through the science, who benefits most, and a few myths worth retiring for good.
Is Tallow Just a Trend, or Is There Real Science Behind It?
Do you think tallow is just a trend, or does it have qualities that make it a worthwhile skincare ingredient?
"Tallow has certainly become popular recently, but it is not a new ingredient. It has been used in skincare for centuries because it is an excellent emollient. Modern research on tallow itself is limited, but we know that moisturizers rich in lipids help reduce water loss, soften the skin, and support barrier function. One reason many people are drawn to tallow today is its simplicity. Many tallow products contain only a handful of recognizable ingredients, making them appealing to those who prefer a more minimalist approach to skincare."
What Actually Sets Tallow Apart
What makes tallow different from many modern moisturizers?
"One of the biggest differences is the ingredient profile. Many traditional moisturizers contain long ingredient lists that may include:
- Fragrances
- Dyes
- Silicones
- Preservatives
- Emulsifiers
- Synthetic additives
Tallow-based moisturizers are often formulated with a much shorter ingredient list while still providing rich moisturization through naturally occurring fatty acids like oleic, palmitic, and stearic acid. These lipids help replenish moisture and soften skin. Unlike many water-based lotions, anhydrous tallow balms provide an occlusive layer that helps reduce transepidermal water loss and keep the skin hydrated."
How Tallow Supports a Healthy Skin Barrier
Why is a healthy skin barrier so important for overall skin health?
"A healthy skin barrier helps keep moisture in while protecting against bacteria, viruses, allergens, pollution, and other environmental irritants. When the barrier is compromised, people often experience dryness, redness, sensitivity, itching, and worsening of conditions like eczema. Protecting the barrier is one of the most important goals in dermatology because healthy skin simply functions better."
How does tallow help support the skin barrier?
"The skin barrier acts as our body's first line of defense. When it's damaged, moisture escapes more easily and irritants can penetrate the skin, leading to dryness, irritation, and inflammation. Tallow helps by supplying lipids that soften the skin and reduce water loss, allowing the barrier to function more effectively. While it doesn't replace all of the natural components of the skin barrier, it can be an excellent part of a barrier-supportive skincare routine."
Who Benefits Most From Tallow (and Who Should Pause)
What types of skin tend to benefit most from tallow-based moisturizers?
"People with dry, mature, or environmentally stressed skin often appreciate the rich moisturizing properties of tallow. It may also be helpful during colder months or in dry climates. Individuals with eczema or compromised skin barriers may benefit from richer moisturizers as well, although anyone with chronic skin conditions should work with their dermatologist to determine the best treatment plan."
Is tallow beneficial for both facial skincare and body care?
"Absolutely. The skin barrier functions similarly across the body, so ingredients that help reduce moisture loss can be beneficial in both areas. Some people prefer a lighter moisturizer for the face and a richer balm for the body, but many tolerate tallow well on both depending on their skin type. When a product contains fewer ingredients, it may also reduce the chance of irritation from fragrances or other unnecessary components for some people."
A note for acne-prone skin: "I would caution people with acne-prone skin using tallow because of its occlusive nature, it may increase breakouts. Tallow in most formulations is not a non-comedogenic product."
What to Expect When You Use It Consistently
What benefits can someone expect when they begin using tallow consistently on both their face and body?
"When someone uses a well-formulated tallow moisturizer consistently, the biggest benefits are often improved hydration and a healthier skin barrier. As the skin barrier becomes supported, many people notice their skin feels softer, smoother, and more comfortable, with less dryness, flaking, and tightness.
- On the face: consistent moisturization can help improve the overall appearance of the skin by enhancing hydration and supporting a healthy barrier, which is essential for resilient, healthy-looking, glowing, youthful skin.
- On the body: areas that are prone to dryness, such as the hands, elbows, knees, heels, and legs, often become noticeably softer and better moisturized.
One of the things I appreciate about tallow is that it's a versatile, naturally derived moisturizer that can be used from head to toe. When people find a product they enjoy and use it consistently, they are more likely to maintain a regular moisturizing routine, and consistency is one of the most important factors in achieving and maintaining healthy skin."
Ingredients That Pair Well With Tallow
What ingredients pair well with tallow?
"I like formulations that keep the ingredient list relatively simple while combining tallow with ingredients that support hydration and barrier health. Depending on the formulation, ingredients such as jojoba oil, squalene, glycerin, or ceramides can complement a moisturizer well. Antioxidants like Vitamin E may also help support skin health and improve product stability."
Common Tallow Myths, According to a Dermatologist
What misconceptions do you hear most often about tallow?
Dr. Gina hears a few myths on repeat, and she was glad to set the record straight.
Myth: Tallow can replace your entire skincare routine. "While tallow is an excellent moisturizer and can help support a healthy skin barrier, it doesn't replace evidence-based skincare like sunscreen, retinoids, or prescription treatments when those are indicated."
Myth: Tallow provides sun protection. "There is no reliable scientific evidence that tallow has a standardized SPF or provides adequate protection against UVA and UVB radiation. As a dermatologist, I strongly recommend using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 every day, regardless of whether you use tallow or any other moisturizer."
Myth: Tallow either clogs everyone's pores, or it clogs no one's pores. "The truth is that skincare is highly individual. Some people tolerate tallow beautifully, while others, particularly those with acne-prone skin, may find richer moisturizers aren't the best fit. It is important to choose products based on your skin type and to introduce any new skincare product gradually."
Her takeaway: "I think the best way to view tallow is as a nourishing, naturally derived moisturizer that can be an excellent part of a healthy skincare routine. It has real benefits for hydration and barrier support, but it's not a cure-all, and it shouldn't replace proven skincare practices like daily sun protection."
